    About the room

A chat room with people in it.

The free chat room has had a rough couple of decades. Most of what a search turns up is a site last updated in 2011, a room where nine of the twelve names are bots, or an app selling you a conversation with a language model by the message. Vyxen is a live text room with real members, running in a browser, costing nothing, with no download and no email required.

Being an 18+ platform changes the room in a way worth knowing about. Nothing here is policed into blandness for the sake of a mixed-age audience, so conversation goes where adults take it. That doesn't mean it's explicit all the time. Most of a normal evening is people talking about work, food, films, whatever has gone wrong this week and whatever is on. It just means nobody is going to be told off for mentioning that they have a sex life.

There's one live room and there's usually someone in it. Say something worth answering when you arrive and you'll be in a conversation. If it goes well you can follow people, move into direct messages, or start a private group chat, and there's a separate one-to-one random chat on Vyxen if you'd rather be matched with one person at a time.

    01 · How a busy room works

Several conversations at once, and that's normal.

A general room isn't a queue. At any moment there are usually two or three conversations overlapping, people replying to something from four lines back, and a few regulars who talk to each other constantly. If you've only used one-to-one chat this looks like chaos for about ninety seconds and then it clicks. You don't have to follow all of it, just the bit you want to join.

Lurking is completely normal and nobody minds. Plenty of people sit in the room for twenty minutes getting a feel for it before saying anything, and plenty never say much at all. There's no expectation to perform, no requirement to introduce yourself, and nobody is keeping a register.

Rooms have quiet hours. A real room with real people in it goes flat at four in the morning in a way that an app full of bots never does, which is the trade-off for talking to actual humans. If it's quiet, say something anyway. Somebody usually surfaces.

    02 · Getting a conversation going

    Why nobody answered your “hi”.

A bare greeting gives nobody anything to work with. It isn't rudeness that gets it ignored, it's that answering it means doing all the work for you. The openers that land have something in them: an opinion, a question about what's already being discussed, a complaint about your day, anything with a hook. “Anyone else's boss just email at 11pm?” outperforms “hi” about a hundred to one.

Joining beats starting. Reading for a minute and then replying to something already happening is far easier than launching a topic cold, and it's how most regulars got started. If a conversation is mid-flow, jumping in is welcome rather than an interruption.

If nothing catches, change the message rather than repeating it. Repeating the same line four times reads as pressure and gets you muted. And don't take silence personally, because a room full of people mid-conversation misses things constantly.

    Plain-language guide

    Chat room shorthand

Most of this is older than the people using it, and none of it is required to join in.

    ASL
Age, sex, location. The classic chat room opener, still going after thirty years, still not as interesting as an actual sentence.
    Lurking
Reading without posting. Entirely normal, and most people do it for a while before they say anything.
    Regulars
The people in most nights who know each other. Not a clique you have to be admitted to, and most of them were newcomers a few weeks ago.
    DM or PM
Direct or private message, one to one and away from the room. Worth asking before you start one rather than appearing unannounced.
    AFK
Away from keyboard. Explains why the person who was mid-sentence has gone quiet for ten minutes.
    Troll
Someone in it for the reaction rather than the conversation. Blocking works better than arguing, because arguing is the thing they came for.
    NSFW
Not safe for work. Flags something as explicit. Worth using as a courtesy even in an adult room, since people read on phones in public.
    Bump
Reposting something that got buried while the room was busy. Fine occasionally, irritating on a loop.
    Catfishing
Running a fake identity on someone else's photos. The reason not to trust anything you can't verify independently.
    Ghosting
Disappearing mid-conversation with no explanation. Happens constantly online and usually says nothing at all about you.

    Before you move off-platform

Openers, DMs and the scams worth knowing.

Chat rooms mostly run themselves. This is the short list of things that decide whether you have a good evening or spend it being ignored.

    • Put something in your first message.

An opinion, a question, a complaint about your day. Anything that gives someone a way in. “Hi” asks a room full of strangers to do the work for you.

    • Join what's happening.

Replying to a live conversation is easier than starting one from nothing, and nobody minds the interruption. It's a room, not a queue.

    • Ask before you DM.

A public conversation isn't an invitation to a private one. Ask in the room first, and take a no without following it up.

    • Block rather than argue.

Trolls are working for a reaction and every reply is payment. Blocking and reporting take one tap each and are the fastest way to end it.

    • Keep your identity to yourself.

Legal name, employer, area, school, financial details, socials. None of it needs to come up, and a display name that isn't traceable to you costs nothing to pick.

    • Know the two common scams.

The romance one moves fast, gets affectionate quickly, then produces an emergency needing money. The sextortion one pushes for explicit photos then threatens to send them to your contacts. Both are scripts run at volume. Never send money, and never send explicit images to someone who has your real name.

    • Verify before you meet.

Get on video or a call first, meet somewhere public, sort your own transport, and tell someone you trust where you're going.

    Common questions

    Clear answers before you join.

    Are Vyxen's chat rooms free?
Yes. The room, posts, direct messages and private group chats cost nothing, there are no credits and there are no ads. Vyxen has a separate creator side you can subscribe to if you want, but none of the chat sits behind it.
Can I chat without signing up?
Yes. There's a guest option that doesn't ask for an email, so you can be talking in about ten seconds. A free account is worth setting up if you want a profile that persists between visits, direct messages, follows and private group chats.
Do I need to download an app?
No. It runs in the browser on a phone, tablet or computer. There's nothing to install and nothing to update.
Is this real people or bots?
Real people. Vyxen doesn't run AI chat partners and doesn't pad the room with fake accounts to look busy. The honest trade-off is that a real room has quiet hours, which an app full of bots never does.
    Is the chat room 18+?
Yes. Vyxen is an adult platform, so every room including this one is for over 18s. It doesn't mean the conversation is explicit all the time, just that it isn't sanitised for a mixed-age audience.
    Is the room moderated?
Yes, and every member can block and report. Illegal content, anything involving minors, harassment and non-consensual material are removed and reported. Moderation cuts the problems down, it doesn't make a stranger trustworthy.
    Can I chat anonymously?
Yes. You pick a display name and nothing on your profile has to point back to you, and guests can chat with no email at all. Bear in mind it works both ways, since the person you're talking to is equally unverified.
