01 · Who is in the room
Out, closeted, and everything between.
The room has people who came out in the eighties and people who came out last month. Gay men and lesbians, bi and pan members who are tired of being told to pick, trans and non-binary members at every stage from thinking about it to fifteen years post-transition, ace members, and a steady stream of people who are questioning and would rather not announce that anywhere their friends can see. Married men who haven't told anyone. Women in their fifties working out that the thing they felt at nineteen never went away.
What gets talked about is mostly ordinary. Dating and how bad the apps have got, first relationships happening late, families who came round and families who didn't, workplaces, HRT and waiting lists, whether to bother going to Pride this year, and a lot of nothing in particular. The room is queer rather than being about being queer, which is the distinction people usually want and rarely find.
Being closeted is common here and nobody treats it as a problem to be solved. Plenty of members are out nowhere except this room, and some are in places where being out isn't safe. That shapes how the room works: people don't push for details, and asking someone why they haven't come out yet is the fastest way to end a conversation.
